The Secret to Stunning Smiles

DENTAL HYGIENE

Visit our hygienist regularly.

Keeping your teeth and gums free of plaque with regular visits to our dental hygienist is one of the simplest and most effective ways to ensure the health of your mouth.

As plaque builds up so do the chances of decay and inflammation of the gums, or gingivitis. If this buildup continues unchecked not only can it stain your enamel and cause bad breath and bleeding gums, but recent evidence shows a link between gum disease, strokes and heart disease.

Most people believe they have good oral health but, in fact, nearly 90% of all adults will suffer some level of gum disease at least once in their lifetime. And for those with dentures, implants, fillings, veneers, crowns or other restorative treatments, seeing a hygienist for regular cleanings is even more essential.

What You Can Expect

Our dental hygienists are specifically trained to give your teeth and gums a refreshing and deep cleaning. When they’re finished they will advise you on the best ways to keep plaque away between visits. They will also show you proper brushing and flossing techniques that suit your individual needs.

Deep Stain Removal using Airflow

Airflow tooth polishing is a well known innovative method of dental cleaning. It successfully tackles persistent staining caused by food and drink, leaving your mouth feeling cleaner and fresher. If you are a heavy smoker with lots of tobacco stain, or a fan of red wine, curry or other colourful foods and drinks, the results are fantastic and the treatment is safe and poses no risk of any damage to your teeth.

IS GUM DISEASE SERIOUS?
Yes. Gum disease is very serious and can cause many problems. When left untreated the disease creates strong acids that will destroy the fibres attached to the teeth and cause hard to clean ‘pockets’. If these pockets are not treated in time they can cause:

  • Loose, moving teeth and/or ‘gappy’ splayed appearance of front teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Bleeding, swollen, spongy painful gums
  • Abscesses
  • Shrinking gums
  • Bad breath and a foul taste in the mouth
  • Loss of bone supporting the tooth

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I VISIT THE HYGIENIST?
There is no hard and fast rule about how often you should visit your hygienists for treatment as it depends on many factors. Everyone’s dental health is different but a good rule of thumb is four times a year. Your dentist will be able to advise you on a treatment program that’s best for you.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I VISIT THE HYGIENIST?
When you visit the hygienist they will examine your teeth and gums closely, looking for any signs of disease or other problems. They will then clean your teeth with hand-held ultrasonic scalers to remove plaque and bacteria, finishing with flossing and the polishing of your teeth.

Advice for Aftercare
Regular professional cleaning combined with looking after your teeth and gums at home will give you a clean and healthy mouth.
